虽然过程比较缓慢，但是微软显然已经恢复了往日的霸主雄风。不断连续推出的战斗类飞行模拟游戏，每部作品都性能稳定，而且规模越做越大，俨然成为模拟游戏流派中的佼佼者。在《模拟飞行战斗2》中我们饱览了太平洋地区的优美风光，在第三部游戏中将重返欧洲的天空。只要是模拟类游戏，大多都以欧洲为背景地，而《模拟飞行战斗3》也不是这个系列中第一部欧洲空战模拟片，早在1998年第一部《模拟飞行战斗》推出的时候，那部二战游戏的发生地就是欧洲。现在让我们一起来看看四年之后的欧洲发生了什么变化。
头几部《模拟飞行战斗》游戏都存在一个问题：游戏中的飞行器模型不多。现在，《模拟飞行战斗3》已经解决了这个问题。在这部游戏中，共有18种基础的飞行器类型，约34架可飞行的飞行器。每个国家(德国、美国、英国)各有六种不同的飞行器。游戏囊括了所有标准的欧洲空战飞机模型，比如说Me-109、Focke-Wulf 190、Me-262、Spitfire、P-38 Lightning、P-47 Thunderbolt和P-51 Mustang。除此之外，游戏中还收入了一些不常用的飞机类型，其中包括英国的de Havilland Vampire(英国研制的第二种喷气机，外形很怪异)、美国的P-80 Shooting Star和Curtiss P-55 Ascender(这种机型在付诸生产之前就停止研制了)、德国的涡轮螺旋桨飞机Dornier Do-335和飞翼Gotha Go-229(也有人称这种机型为Horten Ho-IX)，这些奇特的飞机并没有参加第二次世界大战，但是《模拟飞行战斗3》为它们创造了一个抛头露面的机会。

在《 SWON 》中你扮演的是美国飞行员 James Chase 。在 1940 年，你被指派到英国皇家空军作战。在展示了你杰出的飞行技术以后，你成为了 Blackhawks的驾驶员 。 Blackhawks 是当时最好的飞机，作为这个部队的成员，你要面对的是整个战争中最为危险的飞行任务。根据剧情需要，最开始你出现在欧洲，从这里你要完成阻止沙漠之狐隆美尔占领非洲的任务。然后是珍珠港事件，此时你会转移到太平洋战场上。然后再次回到欧洲破坏德国的一些毁灭性武器的计划。这些故事被一些陈旧的黑白照片和 James Chase 的日记很好的串了起来。

游戏 PC 版可以使用手柄或摇杆设备，而且这确实是最好的选择。游戏很容易操作，飞行特性设定也相对简单，这使得你可以很快就像一个飞行专家。在任何时候，你都可以使用类似《 Max Payne 》的慢动作选项，使得射击操作非常简单。而且，非常容易就能咬住敌机的尾巴，开火基本上就能打下来。有些坚固的目标，比如说坦克或运输机，也只需要几发炮弹就可以了。可是你的飞机却非常强悍，在整个游戏中，可以 3 次升级装甲，也就是说，你基本上不会被击落，除非你是故意的。即使你的飞机损坏严重，或者是打光了子弹，附近还会有友军的机场让你降落，修理飞机或者是补充弹药。在游戏末期难度会有一些提高，但是这时你已经拥有强大的火力，对飞行控制也做到了随心所欲，所以这时攻击敌人就如入无人之境。
